William H. Powell letters, 1864.

The collection consists of five letters, 21-29 July 1864, written by William H. Powell to General William W. Averell, Captain H. Harrison, and Captain W. Rumsey, while Powell was commanding a brigade of cavalry as part of General David Hunter's campaign through the Shenandoah Valley in pursuit of Confederate general Jubal Early. The letters, written from Stephensburg, W.Va., and near Winchester, Va., describe Confederate movements and reports of activity.

Averell was born in Cameron, New York. As a boy, he worked as a drugstore clerk in the nearby town of Bath, New York.
